What We Do

The Vision, Organization, and Actions of the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research were reviewed by SCOR National Committees in 2017 and approved by the SCOR Executive Committee in 2018.

Vision. To advance ocean research within and across disciplines by stimulating international cooperation in ocean sciences.

Organization. SCOR is a non‐governmental scientific organization affiliated to the International Science Council, directed by national SCOR committees, supported by national and international agencies and foundations, and powered by hundreds of scientists. SCOR’s remit explicitly recognizes the global nature of the ocean and of ocean science, which frequently calls for international scientific collaboration and interaction.

Actions:

  1. Involve national ocean science communities through national SCOR committees.
  2. Provide mechanisms for ocean scientists around the globe to identify and pursue collaborative scientific activities to increase knowledge of the ocean.
  3. Identify and address gaps in ocean science within and across disciplines.
  4. Identify and solve methodological barriers for the advancement of ocean science.
  5. Develop capacity and capability for ocean science globally.
  6. Communicate the outcome of SCOR activities to the international ocean science community, partners, policymakers, and the public.
  7. Conduct fundraising to support these actions.
