Call for SOOS Scientific Steering Committee Nominations
The Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) and the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) invite nominations of qualified individuals to serve on the SOOS Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) for terms beginning in September 2026.
SOOS SSC members are selected for their scientific excellence and standing in a field of Southern Ocean science that is relevant to at least one of the SOOS Science Themes or Foundational Capabilities in the SOOS Science and Implementation Plans (2026-2030 plan currently being developed), and connection to, and representation of a SOOS-relevant community or program. The SOOS objectives are multidisciplinary and integrated, thus SSC members need to have interests in developing and planning of system-scale implementation strategies, beyond their core scientific interests. The SSC membership strives to maintain diversity through disciplinary, nationality, gender and career-stage balance. SOOS encourages nominations from South America and underrepresented groups within the SSC. Information on current SOOS SSC members is available here. Membership on the SSC is for a three-year period, with the potential for renewal for an additional three years, on approval of the SOOS Executive Committee, SCAR and SCOR.
Deadline: 30 June

REGISTER for the 7th DMS(P) Symposium in October 2026
It’s time to register for the
7th DMS(P) Symposium: Sulfur Carbon Nexus in the SOLAS Sphere
A joint workshop with SCOR, SOLAS, and Schmidt Sciences: Climate
October 12-15, 2026 in person at Bigelow Laboratory (Boothbay Harbor, Maine) and online.
The organosulfur compound dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) ignited an entire subfield of biogeochemistry to investigate the precursor of the “anti-greenhouse gas” dimethylsulfide (DMS). Since then, decades of research have unveiled the importance of DMS(P), and related compounds, to carbon cycling and air-sea interactions, and ultimately an outsized contribution to global climate. This Symposium will bring together a diversity of researchers interested in synthesizing the inextricable link of the sulfur and carbon cycles from cellular to global scale processes.

Opportunity for early career researchers – publication honor
The journals L&O, L&O Letters, and L&O: Methods, through their editorial fellows (Raelyn Cole Editorial Fellows), have launched a call for applications to select 12 early-career scientists to publish an Open Access article in the journal at no cost! The award is valued at approximately US$3,000–$3,600 and covers Open Access publication fees. In addition, applicants may receive advice from the editorial fellows on how to improve their manuscript before it is submitted to the journal’s peer review process.
The application form is very simple. Applicants will need to provide some personal and educational information, such as their affiliation and the year in which they obtained their highest degree (B.Sc., M.Sc., or PhD). This call for applications was specifically designed to prioritize scientists from underdeveloped and developing countries (the Global South) and scientists from groups that are under-represented in STEM fields. Your manuscript does not need to be finalized at the time of application, but you do need to have a writing timeline in place. The final deadline for manuscript submission is June 1, 2027.
The application can be found at this link, and the deadline to apply is July 10, 2026. If you have any questions, you may contact the editorial fellows at rcef.aslo@gmail.com. You can also follow the fellows on X at @rcef_aslo to learn more about this and other opportunities. Please help us spread the word about this opportunity to your colleagues and contacts!
