SCOR Working Group 168 Webinar #8
Title: Global patterns in small organic particle loss in the mesopelagic
Presenter:
Stephanie Henson
National Oceanography Centre
Here we use a 4D BGC-Argo based data product to investigate the spatial distribution and seasonality in small particles, as well as their loss in the mesopelagic zone. We find evidence that small particles may be sinking (albeit slowly), generated in situ by mesozooplankton activity and/or subducted by mixing events. We also find that the small particle loss in the mesopelagic is greater at high latitudes than at low latitudes and conclude that particle lability is likely to be a significant factor in explaining this unexpected result.
