As COP30 approaches, members of BEPSII, ASPeCt, CATCH, and PACES have once again come together to issue a unified statement from the scientific community on the state of the cryosphere.
Building on last year’s “S.O.S. from the Poles,” this renewed call highlights the accelerating loss of the world’s ice sheets, glaciers, sea ice, and permafrost, and the cascading risks for global climate, sea level, and human security. It also reminds world leaders that geopolitical tensions and short-term national interests must not distract from the defining global challenge of our time: the climate crisis.
We invite organisations and institutes concerned about the cryosphere and global climate stability to endorse the letter and join this collective call for action. If your organisation endorsed the S.O.S. from the Poles last year, we warmly thank you for your support and invite you to renew your endorsement for this updated statement ahead of COP30.
The letter will circulate for endorsements throughout October 2025 and will be released publicly in early November 2025, ahead of COP30 in Belém, Brazil, and presented again at the COP30 Cryosphere Pavilion.
How to endorse:
- On behalf of your institute or organisation: Read and endorse the open letter here https://forms.gle/Z6UkhSCijF6tvsSaA if you have the right to do it.
- As an individual: Forward the message to the decision-maker(s) of your institute/organisation who can undersign the Open Letter; Share the message through your networks, media contacts, and at upcoming events; Amplify the call to action at national, regional, and global scales.
The cryosphere is our planet’s early warning system. Acting decisively now is essential for the future of both the planet and humanity.
On behalf of BEPSII, ASPeCt, CATCH, and PACES,
Letizia, co-chair of BEPSII
