Saroma Sea ice School 2026 – Call for applications

The Saroma Sea Ice School 2026 will be held from 28 February to 9 March 2026 in Saroma-ko Lagoon, Hoakido Island, Japan.

The Saroma Sea Ice School is an interdisciplinary winter field school for early-career scientists – primarily Ph.D. students, but also open to master’s students and early postdocs – focused on the interactions among sea ice, snow, clouds, and aerosols in polar regions. Through a combination of classroom lectures, expert-led workshops, and hands-on fieldwork (including sea ice coring and atmospheric sampling), participants will explore the key processes that shape the Arctic and Antarctic climate systems. Organised by the BEPSII, SCOR WG 163 CIceClouds, and CATCH working groups, the program aims to equip the next generation of sea ice researchers for Antarctica In Sync and the International Polar Year among other international polar initiatives.

The application is open and closes at the end of September 2025. More information can be found here. The application is here.
