Dr. Sergey Shapovalov is
head of the Center for Coordination of Ocean Research in the
P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SIO
RAS). His PhD thesis was devoted to the study of inertial period internal waves.
Dr. Shapovalov earned his PhD in 1979 from SIO RAS, where he has worked since 1973. During his time in the
Institute of Oceanology, Dr. Shapovalov has been a seagoing oceanographer and took part
in the 18 long-term scientific cruises. In 1988, he changed his place of
work to the Oceanographic Commission of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of
Sciences and returned to the Institute as head of the Center in 1998. The main
objective of the Centre is to coordinate research of oceans and seas on the
domestic and international level. Dr. Shapovalov is a member of the Russian
National Oceanographic Commission of the Ministry of Education and Science of
Russia. For several years, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the
Pacific Congress on Marine Science and Technology (PACON). Dr. Shapovalov has
been Executive Secretary of the Russian National Committee for SCOR for many
years also.
Currently, his research interests include many areas, but primarily the physical processes of interaction at the ocean-air and ocean-bottom
boundaries.
